Bibi or African Mask Finch - any info?

Post by Queen_Bee » Wed Aug 03, 2011 11:22 pm

There are some of these for sale in my area and I can't find any info on them. Do they go by any other names? Anyone have any information on them at all? I might be interested in a pair if they good community birds.

Never heard of a African masked finch. Do you think it could be a masked weaver?

Why not contact the seller and ask for more details on the birds (and a latin name if they know it).

I'm going to call him today but it was really late last night when I saw the ad and "enquiring minds need to know". :) I'll check our the masked weaver idea before I call.

It isn't. This guy is selling a bunch of different birds and has them split up by continent. He is selling Masked grass finches too, but he has then listed with his Australian birds. I guess I'll just have to wait another hour or so and give him a call and find out! :? When I find out I'll let you all know!

I googled bibi and it corrected me "bib"

this is what I came up with...it is a mannikin...it has a black eye mask and bib and is from Africa, also known as a Bib Mannikin, African Parson finch, Dwarf mannikin

http://www.efinch.com/species/madagascar.htm

they are stunning...I say go for it if this is it!

That could be them! Hopefully I will get a chance to see them in person later today. Thx. Google didn't offer me that alternative!

Cindy this bird is actually from Madagascar. I am familiar with it. It is the smallest of the mannikins, right up there with the bronze-wing. I have no clue however how it got the name African Parson finch. I guess it is possible they have spread to Africa. Not sure.
I am beginning to think that it probably is the masked weaver, they were available for a while this summer.

John...the one on efinch is really nice looking....I think the mannikins have a very nice look to them, soft.

It will be interesting to see what this person actually has advertised.

Keep us posted Jacqui! (with pictures)

If this is the add, Cindy hit it the nail on the head. The bird Cindy pictured is the same bird that is posted on the add.

That's the ad - the picture wasn't the greatest and I wasn't sure if that was the bird or not. OK, good to know. From the description I read I don't think they're the bird for me. I don't think I have enough space to deal with aggression. Thanks for the help everyone!
