Lavender's Incubating/Nesting! 4 FERTILE EGGS!

Post by finchmix22 » Wed Aug 10, 2011 9:49 pm

I wasn't sure earlier this week, but I caught my lavender parents out of their nest and tried to snap a few pics. I saw four fertile eggs in the nest and when I tried to take pictures, the hen flew back and the cock stood guard in front of the nest. I may have a few that will give you an idea of what they are doing, but I need to shrink the size first. More in a few minutes!

Cindy,
Here is the best pic I could take without upsetting them too much! All my other attempts were blurred by their rapid flight past my camera and away from the light. LOL.

The hen left the nest, just as I took this pic, but she was poking her head out looking so cute!

I don't know if this is the Dad or Mom, but they are trying to put back the material that fell out when they flew out.

I saw the eggs and they all "looked" fertile, but we'll see as they are skittish and in a flight.

Mine are flighty more so since they built their nest. They are stunning little birds!

That is exactly how I describe the lavenders. I really see them as elegant and very stunning and beautiful finches! I love to watch them, but they are new and flighty. I hope they calm down some so I can watch them easier. Now, I hide to the side of a towel over their section of the flight to peek or try to get pics.

That is wonderful news, Deborah! My new males are almost ready to come out of quarantine, so I hope my hens will be as eager to go to nest with their new mates. I also agree, this species is so elegant, I just love them. The one drawback is that they are monomorphic--I love species that are dimorphic, making sexing easy for me!

Update: The lavenders decided to quit sitting on the eggs. My Society's already have five eggs and I have one GS who desperately wants to nest. She had laid one egg and dutifully sitting on the egg, so I put the lavender eggs in with her egg and she is sooo happy. :D She sits and acts very protective and male is running everyone else away from the nest now. Maybe this GS pair will be good fosters. [-o<

Good luck and best wishes Deborah.

I haven't had any luck in hatching Lavender eggs here though they were fertile. I'll be watching this thread is much anticipation. [-o<
