I have one little penguin baby that appaears healthy but has a very odd sleeping position...he does not roost like other finches...I actually think he thinks he is a real penguin. He sleeps sitting but he rests his tip of his beak on the roosting platform or top of the seed hopper like a penguin in the wild.
He sleeps in this postion and the more relaxed he gets his little beak slides out forward and he ends up laying on his side or out flat...I thought he was dead a few times.
Has anyone ever seen a zebra finch do this?

No but I'd love to see a photo!!! i do have a Sun Conure that sleeps sitting up kind of with his tail under him in his cozy tent. He leans up against the back like a reclining chair with one foot holding on to a toy hanging outside his cozy. It's the strangest thing I've ever seen but your Penguin might even be a little stranger than that! Sounds very cute.

I'll have to see if I can catch a time to get a picture of him bending over and touching the tip of his beak to the roosting platform. Then one of him completely relaxed. Today he was resting on a double perch (two perches next to each other) resting his belly on the perches with side of his head resting on the perch...reminds me of a cat.
I've seen baby parrotlet, parakeets do this but never a finch.

He seems alert and eating but just has some strange sleeping habits.

We've had the occasional young 'un demonstrate a similar unusual sleeping position. Certainly took us aback when we first noticed it. Don't really see any of them sleep that way anymore so I guess they "grew" out of it.

My Society fledges did the same thing on the edge of their nest, resting their heads downward toward the bottom, slightly leaning on the edge of the opening. They appeared too tired to hold their head up like other birds. Now, they roost like everyone else.
