What kind of zebra finch is this?

Post by lstyles » Wed Aug 17, 2011 3:31 pm

I have one chick from a male CFW (very light flanking) and a fawn hen. I don't know if they are carriers for anything else. Here he/she is (foreground):

It would seem from this pairing that all males would be grey/split for fawn and split for CFW. Females would be CFW. This chick doesn't look CFW but it doesnt look normal grey (or fawn for that matter).
Any ideas from the experts?
thanks,
Lori

You are correct about what the pairing should produce, but they could carry anything else in split form. it looks to me like they are both carrying the pied gene and you have a beautiful pied baby, should be a male if dad is CFW because females would be CFW like you said.

Thanks for the input. I was thinking pied too but didn't know I had any birds that carried that!
Always fun to see what comes out with the zebras!

Some zebras show a few white feathers if they are split but some, like one of my males, none at all! So it's a really easy trait to hide :)
You might also get pied whites from this pairing.

From the looks of that rather thick tear drop marking, the little one just might have some BC going on there as well
