Decided to candle my 5 societies eggs, and all 5 of them appear to be fertile! I didn't keep track of when the eggs were laid/when they started incubating, and I leave for San Francisco on Friday for 13 days...so I'm sure I'll be coming home to babies! My birdsitter has a lot of work cut out for her this time around...
The male is a crested chocolate pied, and the female is a normal chocolate pied. Should be some interesting babies come from the two of them!

Congratulations! I can't wait to see what type of babies you get. Hopefully at least half crested.

Just got home last night from my vacay to california, to discover I have a nest full of 4 baby societies! They still have their eyes closed, but have some pin feathers coming through, and you can see the colors coming in! Very exciting! This is the good news...
The bad news... my male orange cheeked waxbill died the day before I got home. I knew he was looking a little frail before I left, but I thought he'd pull through... I think he was a really old bird to be honest. All the others look bright & healthy, so I'm not worried about a disease.

Sorry for the loss of the orange waxbill, but congratulations on the new chicks. Very bitter sweet, but there's hope in the new life that has taken the place of those who have passed. Please keep us updated on your four new feathery gems of joy.
