Wondering how many on here keep societies and how many? I currently have six, 4 males and 2 two females, with 2 of the males being crested. I used to keep Zebras too but after almost a week they were just too noisy for me.

I have a female society. I also have a Zeb and a spice.

I LOVE the societies.

I really like societies due to the fact that they're not too noisy. They'll chirp here and there just to let you know that they're there. It's not loud and often enough to make you wish they'll stop

I keep one pair of societies. One male and one female. Their third clutch of the year hatched this past week... so I have to make sure there are no more babies from these two until next year!

In fact, while my female society was laying on her eggs, my male society was cheating on her with a female star finch. (They are in my big aviary). Anyway, a week later, my female star finch laid an egg, got egg bound, ended up passing the egg, but then died! So her egg was on the floor of the aviary. I ended up putting it in with the society's eggs, and it hatched.

Then the female society tossed the baby! I think because she knew her man had been cheating! I was very sad because I left for a cruise last Thursday and just got back today, and if I was here I would have tried to hand feed the baby myself!

Anyway, so yes, I have societies and they are some of my favorites!

I am having supreme bad luck getting any Society to mate. Never had them before.
I started by cage separation for a week to see which ones sing. I then clipped their tails square disignating them as males on all singers, not noise makes but those who did sing.
Put the ones that say nothing with the singers, provided nests and nothing has happened in a week.
Haven't even used the nests to sleep in. When the Goulds sing, then some of the Society Finches will also kick into gear singing, but I see no sexual activity or interest. They sing beautifully but they seem to need some bird viagra of something.
any advice?

They've only been together for a week? That is barely time for them to get used to the cage, much less bond. Give them some more time to settle in, they will give you babies eventually.

Oh wow - I just counted my societies. I have, um, forty-one..... I have four pied who are my best fosters, and the rest are my Japanese, all selfs. Needless to say, I love the little guys.....

That is a lot of societies!

No kidding! Want some? That's from four clutches of chicks - I had to firmly tell them all NO more chicks until I find somebody who likes them as much as I do who is willing to buy some of them!

thats some going with your societies ..but i dont want to pour scorn on it but i think it was time that you split some of them up as you will start to get too much interbreeding going on!

Oh, I only cage-breed, since I totally agree with you on the inbreeding. I have an albino-gray pair that produced two clutches (5 albino chicks between the two clutches), a chiyoda and his mate (but alas no chiyoda chicks out of two clutches) and his sister, who snuck her own eggs in when she was supposed to be sitting on some gould eggs (father unrelated). If I want chicks I separate the pair and give them their own cage - nobody else is given the opportunity to incubate.
