Blue-breasted Cordon Bleus...(I hope)
Okay I'm sure about the male... what about the female? About the only differences I can see between her and my RCCB hen is the thin line of blue on top of the beak on the BBCB hen and a much more black on the beak of the BBCB hen than the RCCB hen. Thoughts?

Gorgeous Liz!
I hope they are a true pair for you... it is hard to tell the females apart, isn't it???

Here is my rccb hen and her juvie baby. The male has much more deep blue colors. Look at the head coloring on the rccb and bccb and see if you can tell the difference, also look at body size. The blues are different on the two hens. Can you see it in the pics? I think the rccb is more of a powder blue and the bccb is more tiel or seagreen bluish in color. Hard to describe, but interesting to look at them together.

I hate to give discouraging info but per this a blue breasted cordon bleu would have brown on it's head and silver beak - http://www.aviariums.com/cordon-bleu-finch.asp
So I think you have a blue capped cordon bleu male there. Not sure about the female.
There's a picture on the link. The main distinguishing feature on the Blue-breasted Cordon is that it has no red cheek patch, and the mandible is more bluish tending to purple. The blue is slightly less intense on a female and less extensive, particularly around the facial area.
So I think you have a blue capped cordon bleu male there. Not sure about the female.

Looks like you are right Mary! Here's another pic of a true pair and they both have dark blue/blackish bills and the male has brown on top of his head.
The pair I just got will be going back.

Exactly Janine - how disappointing. But my Cubans made up for it by having the first egg hatch today (2 days early) and the divider is now in place.

Definitely a BCCB male -- not sure about the hen.
Now... must get a female BCCB and a male BBCB!
Problem solved!
Believe me, they are adorable little birds if you haven't had them -- aside from their tossing propensity that is.

Yes they are adorable (other than tossing). I already have a pair of RCCB and my daughter has a pair of true BCCB's so I was hoping for BBCB's. Another time I'm sure. This pair (true or untrue BCCB's are still going back next week).annague wrote:Definitely a BCCB male -- not sure about the hen.

Merci madame!
Here's a short video clip of the new wee wonder. Of course he had to hatch on cleaning day (which will now be delayed for a few days for that side of the birdroom).
