Hi, new to the forum. I recently acquired two zebra finches in the misguided thought to use them to foster my gouldian eggs. Then I read deeper into this forum and others and realized it wasn't such a good idea.
Anyway they are so much fun! I did have zebras years ago and forgot how much I like their chirping and antics. Now to the question: I'm not sure what kind of zebras they are. they're not just greys, but poring through the photo's of the various mutations, I can't pin them down. How can I put up a pic for help?

here is how to upload pics: when you go to write a post, below the area where you type the message, it says "upload attachment". click on the "choose file" button, find the pic on your computer, then click "add the file". then you will see the uploading screen and you're good to go! you can submit the post from there.

Hi Amy, Thnks for you reply! I hope these pix are ok. I think my male is a piebald but my hen seems different, no tear mark and a white chest. any ideas?

The top male is a pied, the female possibly a penguin but could be pied also...I would need to see her tail feathers to compare, penguins have a frosted looking tail pattern.

If she is a penguin and you breed the male pied with her the penguin qualities in the offspring will be changed. The pied removes the orange in the male offspring...removing it from the side flanks and cheeks leaving the cheeks white and sides white on the males. On both the male and female offspring it will leave white pied markings on the back though the gray and chest. Once pied is introduced into a blood line it is very hard to get rid of.

If you ever wanted to breed for penguin offspring (provided she is a penguin) you would need to get a normal non pied male or another penguin male. I raise penguins and have 5 pairs and young. Cute little birds.

If you can get a picture of her back and tail it would help, the white blotches at the top near the beak ate normal for penguins along with white flecking in the gray on the head.

Hi Cindy, Thanks for the links. I have two pix of her back, don't know if there clear enough. If she is a penguin, i'll research the male and try to find one. Meanwhile these two kids are having a ball and filling a nest with eggs. I'll keep track of who pops out though, I band my babies so I can keep a record.

the male is pied and so is the female, but the female looks to be split to something! i LOVE pieds!!!

Penguin pied split, my uncle currentl has a pied penguin male. J'll post photos tommorow as the light is off.

It looks like both might be split to pieds, the only experience I have had with the combination of the two mutations is with a peid male.
A pied penguin combination usually results in the lose of the orange in the cheeks and flanks of the male offspring.

Since they are both could be split to pied (white wing edges) the results might vary

this is what a male and female penguin split to pied may give you

50% Penguin /Pied
25% Penguin Pied
25% Penguin

You may get offspring that look like mom and dad with the white on the wing edges (penguin/pied).

and/or penguin pieds...you see more white pied markings, some of the orange or all the orange will be removed.

or you could get penguins.

you can refer to Dante's thread, there are picturs of a male penguin pied...notice the lack of orange cheeks and flanks. I love my penguins, the look is so cute.

I'll also post pictures of m uncles tommorow, the lights go on at 6 and here, me and my uncle usually stay up all night looking up finches on the computer. so as soon as it turns six I'll get the feeding out of the way so I have time for pictures

You have some beautiful birds there. The penguins are really nice, gonna have to look into them when I get some more room. I really like your layout too.
