Odd little fawn zebra with black throat and face markings

Post by cindy » Mon Jan 09, 2012 9:17 am

Both parents are fawn and this little guy started showing black in his cheek over the orange, then last night I noticed this little guy is sporting a black throat, tear is reduces and there are identical black markings on either side of the beak and his rump is black. Flanks are barely visable. All his other siblings are fawn except for one brother that is sporting just the black breast bars...the other brothers from the previous clutch and this one are all fawn, not a bit of black. He is still coloring up so it will be interesting to see what comes from this...the markings on the face have me wondering.

There is some odd stuff going on in Finchville!!!!

Huh! Interesting case!
I would say BF if the wasn't still so much white by the beak.
BB?
But that still doesn't make much sence because of the black, does it look like a largeish tearmark or just a blob of black haha?
I'm puzzled.

Tell him to molt faster! :D

I know Ameza...big puzzle. The other showing the black smudges has not dom this yet. The young from this pair are the slowest to color up. The young from the last clutch just finishes...visually fawns, one with white wing edges and a soft not ragged white spot on the head and around the top of the beak...could be split to BB.

Ah the sweet mysteries of life!!!

Indeed!
I guess the million dollar question is, what does his tail look like? Is it a clear BB tail or a normal one?

No bars you say :) Then it could very well be BB, or fawn BB probably.

But if you get a picture be sure to post it ;)

The black bit still confuses me though, I wonder if he might be BF that he is molting into. The parents aren't BF though are they?

Then again I have never seen a BF chick...I guess they would not show any white by the beak.

So cute.... My Orange eyebrow guy has a few chicks, two have very reduced tears and little white...the one on the right in the front interests me.

this odd little bird has black down throughout his side near his shoulders...I caught all the young up and banded them and he is definately the odd one in the bunch!

I admit I don't know much about these zebra mutations, but could he have pied going on? The pics seem to make his face look spotty?

the father might be split to BB....it is possible a BF. The other siblings are all fawn like their mom and dad. He has a black tail and rump instead of the fawn tail color.

Pied is the removal of color and replaced with white. This bird started off fawn, the orange cheek patches appears after molting the cheeks had black smudges, the black breast bar markings appeared and the tail feathers became black....the beak as a baby was bhorn colored. The other male molted and had a black breast bar insted of a brown one and the rump and tail are black.
