So, a couple months ago I purchased two spice finches. Well... this is the first time I have ever owned spice finches. I have a pretty large variety of species of finches and these are the only ones that BITE very hard!

Does anyone else own spice finches and have noticed this? What are your experiences with spices. I'm really considering selling them b/c I am not enjoying them as much as I enjoy the rest of my finches!

I assume you're talking about biting you? Mine don't bite that I know of, but I don't handle them. As far as finches go, they have not been terribly pleasant in general. My original hen got the heck beat out of her by her man and he proceded to mutilate one of the youngesters they had. I'm down to 4 now and won't be breeding or replacing them. I love their color but only 2 actually look good, all the others have continually gotten picked on and have never had full beautiful feathers. The enclosure is quite large (I think) and no matter what I do they always seem to pick at each other. I had to take one hen out and put her in a cage (inside the aviary) I feel bad that she can't be out exploring.

Yes, I think I'm not a big fan of the spice finches... I haven't really grown a bond to them in my aviary like I have with a lot of my other finches.

I pretty much feel the same. It's too bad because when all their feathers are in they are quite pretty. As babies they look the color of chocolate milk. Really cute.

I only let my spice pair breed once since I have to be careful who I keep them with. I currently have a pair in a mixed cage of mannikins and their kids in with zebras and shaft tails. I know that others have had absolutely no problems with them, though. I enjoy the male's song, and personally think that my black headed nun can bite a heck of a lot harder than they can!

Well, I think that I am going to get rid of my spice finches. They don't seem to fit in with all the other birds in the aviary.

So if anybody on here that lives in Colorado, send me a message if you want two spice finches!

I have a set of spice and she is more aggressive then the male and she does bite hard til she gets use to you . I have take alot of paitent with her and would just sit infront of the cage with my hand in the cage til she learned I was not going to hurt her and she stopped bitting and be so aggressive and once I got her a mate she calm down even more .. Give her some time before you get rid of them . They are unsual and they breed different then the other finches . In time you will enjoy having them and watching them

I was just wondering if I misunderstood you Emily. Do you mean they bite you when your hand is in the cage? As in attack you?

No, they bite me when I hold them to clip nails or give meds, etc...

I'm actually putting mine up for adoption, so if anyone is in Colorado and needs spice finches let me know!

Can't really blame them for that... being caught is a scary thing for most finches.

Well... you souldn't just get rid of them for that. It's not their fault. Finches aren't always "hands-on" birds.

I don't like my spice either.
