I had to snatch this guy up. While societies are as readily available as they are I am noticing it is not so common to find something outside of the pied and dilute varieties. As far as I can tell this little guy/girl looks to be 100% fawn.

The selfs are single-color rather than pied (though really their feathers are all different colors!).

I love self societies a lot more too... there are a lot of piieds that (in my opinion) are really ugly. Although, I breed my societies and occasionally I'll get a beautiful pied...

Every so often you can find very nice looking Societies at Petsmart. Several months ago we found one at a Petsmart in Jeff. City MO. while visiting family. She's a beautiful crested chocolate pied that has very nice balance in her markings. We didn't expect to find her, but we always travel with a hospital cage just for those rare occasions.

Turns out he is indeed a 'he.' After a few days of getting familiar with the new environment this little one sings almost non-stop. It's interesting seeing how my other societies respond to him since they are in the full throws of incubation. He's really having to work for their attention, and is miles away from being a welcomed member of the nest. I wonder if he and my pied fawn could produce one or two selfs.

If breed him with a pied I think you'd probably just get more pieds from the pairing. Your best bet is to try and find another self for him to breed with if you want to keep the self intact.

If you decided to get seriuos about locating a self, Tim Weisman in Chicago is big into Societies and normally he has several self blood lines.

you really need to know that the ,bird you mate it with is a self otherwise you could get all kinds of colours coming out..infact if you dont know the parentage of your self then it could have pied babies!

Selfs are basically birds that had the pied bred out of them. If you are anywhere near the mid-Atlantic I breed them, and have several available.

Wow, that opened a can of worms, a good one too. Thanks for the warnings guys, in the future I'd definitely try to keep some self bloodlines, and thank you especially fairest for the recommendation. I think I'll be getting a little more serious about breeding these guys when spring rolls around and I can make some more suitable housing.

I occassionally stop by all the local petsmart and petco just to see if they have anything interesting in. I recently picked up a female self chocolate society that looks to be part japanese style society (ones with a regular crest on top head and the fluffy chest and neck feathers) from Petsmart.


As for the breeding I beleive pied is dominant. I did a breeding using male self chocolate to pied fawn female and somehow all the youngs turned out to be chocolate but were all pied also.

Ken, is that a picture of a gray headed / white breasted / gray back gould? White cheeks are throwing me, as it then resembles a Java.....
