canaries mixed with finches?
I saw some photos of aviaries with canaries & finches mixed together. I didn't know you could house them together? Anyone out there who successfully did this before?

Some are fine. I have had canaries like some finches and not tolerate others. I woul try it if the area is large.

Re: canaries mixed with finches?
Canaries and finches will go fine on mist occasions in a good size cabinet or aviery. I've mixed mine for years with little disturbances to either. Finches at the start will be intimidated by the canaries size but after a week or so will take them as the norm. Canaries will always be at the top of the pecking order with smaller sized finches so it would be beneficial to have multiple water and food stations and if giving softfoods, greens,ECT also have them in multiple spots. The only problems which I had with having canaries and finches together were from cup nesting finches as the canaries took the best nesting places and the finches were left with substantial places to nest which resulted in poor or no breeding on their behalf which to me was a new learning curve. I have mine placed in an aviery and large cabinets. Dimensions of my cabinets are 2mtr long 1mtr high and 0.8mtr wide which had 2pr of finches and 1pr of canaries. My aviery is large and is broken into 4 sections all consisting of 3mtr long 2mtr wide and 2.7mtr high which I have 2pr of Canary and multiple pairs of finches. I have been breeding my birds like this for many years so it has taken a long time to get all the birds to live harmoniously together, basically having multiple pairs of canaries together. In a nut shell it can work but an instant of bad behaviour you should split them.

Re: canaries mixed with finches?
I have kept canaries and finches together for years but as others have said, it depends on the temperament of the birds. I dont find canaries particularly bossy, except to one another. I have had St Helenas push canaries around and my Jacarini cock doesnt like variegated canary males for some reason. I also have a very fat old canary cock bird who insists on feeding all new born chicks irrrespective of their breed. This seems to annoy their real parents enormously!!! So, as in everything, there will be a number of dynamics that will effect the birds, mostly that we have no control over which may or may not determine whether they will mix together. For me-it has not been a problem so far.
