Hello there , I am new to this site that I found it quite by accident. I am in need of information about Saffron Finches. I was given a "pair" , but I am not sure that they a couple.
I have had succes in the past breeding parrots. I have since downsized...lol , Zebra finches and canaries hold my attention these days
Any and all help with Saffron finches will be welcome.

Have you looked at the FIC?

http://www.finchinfo.com/birds/finches/ ... _finch.php

It says on there about sexing them "The hen is more dull in color and her under parts are paler. She may appear to be similarly colored to a juvenile (being mostly gray with dark streaks). However, as the birds age their color tends to become more intense, so that older hens may appear brighter than cocks in their first adult plumage."

You could also check out these sites:

I personally have never owned a saffron finch. But I hope this helps :)

We used to keep Saffrons. The male will have a red hue on his head kinda like he's blushing on the top of his head. The hens have no red. If you have one of each you should be able to easily tell the difference.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate the time you took to reply. I fear I might have two males, they both have red on the top of their heads....but !!! one insists on sitting in a nest while the other always chooses a branch (oh what a tangled web they weave ...as they try to deceive...me). I am hoping against hope that one is still moulting...thanks again
