Lone Crested Society question

Hi Folks!

I need some feedback on my society finch, Tumbleweed.

Last November we lost Tumble's companion finch to illness. Tumble, himself, is doing well and back to full health. He does not seem lonely. In fact he and I have have bonded and he is very social with all human members of the family (more so than before the others passing who was the more dominant).

I know that Societies are best kept with more than one birds and in the past I have replaced a companion finch who has passed. I think know I am attached to this one and afraid of an outside bird making him sick or beating up on him! But I do not want him to be wanting.

But he seems content; he plays, eats, drinks and talks more than ever. (The only thing he does not do since he is by himself is nest, although he sleeps in the nest provided.)

I have my eye on another crested society (that I am almost sure is another male from observation, which is what I want) at Petsmart.

But I just don't know. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!
~Misty

I also have been told that if I am worried I should them side-by-side in a separate temp cage, but I can't really afford to buy a 2nd cage nor do I have the room. Never had to do that before...... :?:

Well, you can by him, if they don't get along you have two weeks to return him. :)

You would need to quarantine the new society, I would not add him to the cage straight from the store especially if you are concerned with your current society getting sick. Did you get the current society from the same place?

Hi Cindy. Yes, in July 2010 I got my current finch at the same Petsmart. If I bought a second cage, how long do I keep the new one in quarantine? And should I set them side by side to see if they get along?

When you quarantine it should always be away from you current stock, in another room. you should deworm and I would use ronex12 on it as well...I usually do about 3 to 4 weeks depending on the source the bird came from. While in qurantine go to your clean stock first then your new stock when feeding and cleaning, The birds may be able the hear each other and if the new one is a male it will hear the other and may sing to it, confirming the sex.

After quarantine and there are no issues with the new bird the cages can go next to each other, after a week or so they can join each other, most likely you little guy will love the company.
