Zeb's & Gould's...

I have a pair of Zeb's (Mom & Pop) who had 2 chicks...The parents are ready for the chicks to leave the nest/cage...I also have 2 Male Gould's in Q...I have found a home for 2 of the Zeb's...I am not 100% about the sex of these babies, but am thinking that they are hens. When do male Zeb's get their orange cheeks? Also, would the Mom & Pop be easier for the Gould's to get along with or 2 hens??? Personally, I would like to keep the hens because I don't want anymore Zebra chicks...Any advice is greatly appreciated...

I'll rather stick to what I know about my Zeb and Gould's: A pair of Zebs would be more aggressive towards the more gentle Goulds as they are naturally more aggressive birds, but it really depends on the size of the aviary and if the Zebs are looking to breed. So your Gouldians will be better off with the 2 hens than a pair. Good Luck

I agree, the pair of Zebs will cause problems for the Goulds, as they are so territorial when breeding. The male Zebs color up really fast, by the time they are weaned you can usually tell what you have--I think the beaks change color about the same time they get their cheek patches.

I also think the zebras will be aggressive to the goulds. I had issues with my zebras and societies, they are being kept separate now because of those little brats.

As soon as the babies leave the nest you can tell within a few days without color if they are male or female. A male zeb will almost immediatly try to sing. You'll know it when you hear it because for the babies it sounds like a long screching beep, not just the normal single 'beep'.
