Gouldian BLUE fusion bar or dirty chest ????????

Post by finchandlovebird » Sat Mar 09, 2013 2:33 pm

I was shocked today at what I saw. I know it's not a "blue fusion bar", but what's with this blue line on his chest??? Is this what is known as a "dirty chest"???? And what does this to to his genetics, and that of his one kid?????
He is Raul: BY/YTB/y.WB/GB/b

his dad was RH/B/Y.WB.SFYB
his mom was BH.WB.BB

and his kid, Peach, I thought was BH/Y.WB.BB (his mom was BH.WB.BB, same as grandma but they are related)

I know Raul's line might be interpreted as purple, but it definitely looks BLUE. Also note the photo where the blue shows next to the wing shoulder.

It looks like what they call a dirty WB, should molt out in time.

A WB can not be split to PB or LB because PB and LB are dominate to WB
You also know now that the hen is split to YH for Raul to be YTB BH

So Raul is YTB BH.WB.GB/Bb

OK: 2 questions.
1. Does it make a difference if you show it YTB BH or BH YTB????

2. In the Revised Edition of A Guide to Gouldian Finches, Pg 47 Blue Breasted. It says & shows a pic which looks like Raul except for the head color .... "RH WB G cock showing a blue band along the bottom of the breast area. the blue color confirms that phaeomelanin is converted to eumelanin in the WB mutations. Birds like this may lead to a Blue-breasted mutation."

If this would be the case (and not just a dirty breast) would breeding him to a PB be a good idea. I have a hen who is RH/y.PB/WB.BB.

I personally don't think it matters TYB BH or BH YTB. I see the YTB mentioned first more though, maybe to establish that it is genetically a YH before mentioning it's visually a BH?

In my revised edition of A Guide To Gouldian Finches blue breast is mentioned on page 97. "Blue breasted are well reported, but are yet to be established as a true breeding mutation. In certain strains of WB the suppression of eumelanin fails and blue patches of color begin to appear." This is why I think they call it a "dirty WB" but even the picture is labeled a WB in the book. He recommends anyone trying to reproduce this color to try using WB birds to help establish the mutation, so I wouldn't use a PB.

I got the pg # wrong; yes, it's page 97. Thanks again for your wisdom Debbie. What would I ever do without you :D  ;)
You are an angel O:-)
So tell me, should I breed him to a White Breasted Blue Back; thinking there's more blue to throw around with a BB?????

Actually, I could choose my WB BB who has a sibling with a Red Fusion Line; then maybe I would get an USA flag pattern on the breast.

Never really put much thought into getting blue breasted gouldians, they don't really appeal to me. You might want to contact Tiffany (nixity) http://www.gouldiansgalore.com for help with that.

Wow, pretty bird! Did you buy this one or breed him?
I have a friend that breeds these birds. She has a past post on here from 2011 and 2012 where the bird retained or got even more blue with each molt. This seems to be a mutation and not a dirty white breast from melanistic problems. She has been trying to introduce the red line into the color mutation also. When she has blue bars for sale I am first in line. I also love the redlines and will be getting one of those soon! Here is the link to her post on her blue bar white breast.
http://finchforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=7 ... t=blue+bar
She could tell you more than I can. I am still learning about these gouldian mutations.

finchlyn .. I bought him in December. Didn't notice the blue bar until this week. Thank you SO MUCH :D for referencing Candice's post. I will be e-mailing her to "talk" about it with her. I had e-mailed Tiffany (Nixity) & she suggested I get in touch with Candice.
I would like to learn more about this blue bar 8)

We have twin finches!
I am trying to discover what this is with my bh/wc(?)/gb split to blue make.
He was hatched in 2016 and had his first adult molt where I was curious to see what his chest colour did, but didn't change.
What colour did your guy end up with?
If it's 'dirty' is this an undesirable gene?
I know this is an old post, but hopeful you are all still on the forum.

Your boy is beautiful! He has a red tipped beak whereas mine had a yellow tipped beak (means mine was split to yellow head, yours is split to red head).
I no longer have Gouldians, but love them still. Read the posts above; maybe some of those will answer your questions.
