Lavendars

Post by dfcauley » Tue Apr 15, 2008 1:50 pm

I need some advice on adding a new type of finch to my open aviary.
I am going this weekend to a bird fair and I have been really wanting
a pair of lavendars. I know that they are considered somewhat pushy, but was wondering if they are worse than zebras?
I have a pair of owls, courdon blues, star, society, gouldian, orange breasted waxbills, and shaftails. Do you think that the lavendars would mix well with these?

I have not had Lavenders, but according to the FIC, they are in the pushy category. I have read that more than two Lavenders shouldn't be kept together in the same enclosure. Hilary has some Lavenders, but she may keep them in breeding cages, instead of an aviary.

If you decide to try them, just have a backup plan in case they do chase the passive birds in your aviary. Hope someone who has actual experience with them chimes in.

I keep my pair of Lavenders with my pair of Owls and they do just fine. Neither are pushy at any time, even breeding; They leave each other alone... but perhaps those are just my birds. It might differ from bird to bird.

Also, I take it that this post means that you don't want any of my babies? ;)

No, not at all. I didn't realize that some considered them pushy. I really do want some badly. I am just trying to find out more about them before investing. I don't want to cause any problems in my peaceful aviary. :)

Unfortunately Sally's right about my setup - all of my pairs are kept separately in breeding cages, so I can't say how they'd mix. Glad to hear they're ok with owls. They are beautiful, funny birds, though - their mating dance is something to see!

I have seen lavenders in a mixed aviary and nothing was said about them being pushy, the breeders did keep just the one male and two females in each of his mixed aviaries though

I've heard of people with actual aviaries - not cages - doing ok with them in mixed company (even breeding). Just don't know about smaller confines, so I guess it just depends on how much space there is.

Everything we were told about our Lavendars was wrong. Ours actually only breed in colony set ups. All I can say is you would have to get some and see the personalities of the birds themselves, and decide if they can are passive enough.
