Noisy Finches

Post by JTF » Sat Oct 14, 2006 6:13 pm

Is there a species of finch that is quiet, as far as early morning singing etc. I am looking to get a pair for a small apt but am not keen on being woke up to a loud racket. Thanks.

We just had a discussion on this subject on another forum. The Lady Gouldian was the bird in question and all agreed that they are very quiet. So you might want to consider getting a couple Goulds. The Cordon Bleus are fairly quiet also, or at least mine are. I would not recommend Strawberry Finches as my male wakes me up every morning at 5am!

I'm house sitting for my brother in a room with 10 finches of various types. My blues seem quieter than any of these finches. The orange cheeked waxbills are almost silent too. They're also pretty darned cute. They just make a cute little peep occasionally. My blue was singing today and it's a beautiful little song, but not loud. The white chested gouldian my brother has sings like a canary. .and loud. It's kind of like being in an Alfred Hitchcock movie in this room right now. LOL

Finches

Thankyou both for the great info. Another Q I have is can most species of finch thrive in homes/apts when the owner is at work with the heat turned down or is a constant temp required.

I try to keep my house at a constant year round temp of 72F, mainly cause I like it that way. But I think the birds do as well.

Having said that, birds that live in the wild must adjust to fluctuating temps and conditions. Your birds should be able to handle a gradual change in temperature so long as it isn't too drastic. I assume you wouldn't be going below 60F or so?

Years ago I had to have my AC worked on, the repairman took it upon himself to adjust the thermostat down to 59F while I was work. It cost me a zebra fledgling, the other nineteen birds were fluffed but survived.

Hi JTF,

Most African Finches are more silent than Australian. Their sound is also more friendly.
From my birds, the African Firefinches are very silent (but maybe that will change, I have had these birds now for a couple of days).
Aurora Finches are very silent.

Spice finches also are very quiet.

I keep my thermostat around 60 fahrenheit, no problems with the finches. As long as they can adjust gradually to a lower temp, they're fine.

I have 16 species, and have to say the only really *loud* ones are the zebras!

Thanks Hilary, much appreciated. I had zebras for a couple of years and bred them once but my wife made me get rid of them as they were to noisy in the am.

I have Spice Finches, too. But mine aren't silent at all! They can make hard whistle sounds and my sister was wakened every day because of their noises...

But maybe mine are just very noisy, I don't know.

I babysat a friend's group of Zebra finches. There were about 8 & they were so loud they sounded like a locust in the summer.

Weavers are pretty much completely silent, every 2 days or so I hear one quiet little chirp but thats it!!!

They are gorgeous and quiet!!!
Appearantly that is normal too, I checked with a few people who have/had them and the pet store, and they do not have a song at all.
