need some owl help

Post by dearbhail » Mon Oct 23, 2006 7:37 pm

hi all, i have two (i believe hens) owl finches. have had them in the same aviary since March this year. For the past 3-4 weeks, one of them has become very aggressive towards the other. They still sleep together in the nest, but during the day one chases the other, and sometimes they chase each other. It has gotten progressively worse and I now have them seperated. Also in the aviary are a pair of strawberries, a pair of mannikins, a pair of orange cheeks. all are male/female, this is the only pair that I think are both hens. I cannot tell them apart! I now have the aggressor in a cage by herself, she seems very upset to be parted from the other birds. Both owls call to each other...kind of a laugh-type series of beeps, followed by a long sea gull like screech. They have been doing that since I got them...but never the aggression.

anyone have any suggesstions or ideas?

the aviary is 8 feet long by 5 feet high, filled iwth lots of food/water and natural branches, and nests (multiple)

any help is much appreciated Thanks!!!

You can try adding visual barriers within the cage such as live (nontoxic) plants so that the birds can hide from each other if they so desire.

The "laughing" sound could be a song? I uploaded an mp3 of a male owl finch's song if you would like to compare it to what you are hearing: http://www.finchinfo.com/audio/owl_song.mp3

owl song

Post by dearbhail » Sat Oct 28, 2006 11:14 am

hi,

thank you Crystal for the mp3 file. it helped quite a bit. my birds sound similar, but their call is not as fast a beat and the long seagull like screech is not present. i think my owls are girls. do you happen to have a female song mp3 or wave file you could upload? then i think i would know for sure

since i have taken the nesting material out, they all are getting along, but i don't think they are happy about roosting all night on a perch.

thank you too, to kenny, for the other link. i had been on that site before but for some reason on my laptop that wave file doesn't work, i just get a hollow clunk noise when i access it.

thanks again to all. :)
