Strawberry finches

Post by dfcauley » Thu Jun 05, 2008 12:00 pm

There is a Petco near me that has a pair of strawberry finches. They have had them for a while. I posted earlier about these birds. No one knows much about them, if they are related or anything. (what's new?)
It is amazing these pet stores....
Anyway..... I have considered purshasing these birds but they were 60.00 each and I hated to do that know nothing about them.
One of them has a tail that goes out into a sort of fan. Do you think this is some type of deformaty? It is a pretty tail with all feather, but I dont know what is wrong with it.
I talked with the manager and she will discount the birds to half price for me. I am considering it but wondered what all your thoughts were and what you thought was going on with that tail....
Thanks for your advice!

Personally I'd snatch them up. If you find another "pair" you can switch the mates out to make sure nobody is related. So many people are looking for strawberries and they're so hard to find right now! I still kick myself for not getting a SB hen that was at my local Petco - she looked healthy but needed a little trim on her beak.

okay, here they are. I went and got them this afternoon.
You can see the tail on one of them sort of fans out.
They look healthy otherwise. Problem is I don't know if they are male
or female yet. Will have to wait and see.ImageImage

You might want to put different color split bands on them, so then if one sings, you will be able to see which one it is. Enjoy, they are wonderful little birds!

Sally I was wondering about that, but with the tail like it is there is no problem at this point. Will I be able to tell hem from cock by the song?

I forgot about the tail on the one, that will make it easy to tell them apart. I only heard my males sing, I think the hens just chirp, but it also took a long time before one of my males sang. So if you hear a beautiful, flute-like song, that will be a boy.
