Pair of Strawberry Finches

Post by BigBear0007 » Sun Nov 30, 2014 9:03 pm

My good wife new how much I wanted a pair of these guys!
So she got me some for an early Christmas present!
The male is just starting to come into his nuptial colouring.
These must be cage bred because they are so calm.
I am over the moon!

Congratulations Jerry! What a wonderful Christmas present. They are great birds. I just got my first pair 6 weeks ago. They are wild caught and it took them a little while to settle down but now they are definitely bonded. My male has less red showing than yours and I've just heard him start singing a few times. His song is so pretty. Can't wait till he is finished molting. Too bad you are so far away - we could swap babies next year (assuming we get some).
Iso

PS: Are you keeping them in a cage or an aviary?

Congrats on the Strawberries, Jerry, they look good! One thing I did notice is that their nails are long and need trimming. Strawberries have nails that are on steroids, they grow so fast! They are also especially prone to getting hung up with the longer nails, they will even hang up on the cage bars. Good luck with breeding them!

Congrats, I would dearly love a pair, but they are far too expensive in South Africa. They cost about R1400 per pair here. That is just a bit less than $130 us. It might seem cheap in US dollar, but in South Africa it is expensive. It seems strange that such a prolific breeder be so scarce \ expensive. People assure me that they breed very easily.

Do you have a recording of your strawberry song? I'm interested to compare with mine. Doing a little research to see if the songs indicate where they originate from. If you can sent me a PM, I will sent you a copy of mine via email.

Wowee!
They're lovely!
What a great find!

Those nails definitely need a clip-a-roo. Sally is definitely right. Something about Strawberries and Spice finch nails. They grow like crazy!

I actually quite like the male's look as-is! He'd be quite lovely if he never changed! Sort of a the bird equivalent of a calico cat.
