Black crowned waxbills?

Post by Maddie » Thu Mar 19, 2015 12:22 pm

Hello!
I'm setting up my new aviary and I'm trying to pick out a few varieties of finches that would be considered passive (I already have societies). I've already looked through the species profiles but I couldn't find info on the Black Crowned Waxbill. Does anyone keep this species? Also, can I keep multiple types of waxbills together if they're all considered passive?

If anyone has other recommendations for pretty, passive finches that can't interbreed with societies, I'm all ears!

Hi Maddie - I have 4 black-crowned waxbills (got them last October) and had the same problem you have : hardly any info. I started a thread called "New black-crowned waxbills" and put whatever Information I found in there. I believe it is on page 2 under 'species'. I have fallen in love with these charming little birds. They remind me of chickadees, are very active but not the least aggressive. I keep them in my outdoor aviary with 2 gouldians, 2 owl finches, 4 strawberries (parents + two kids), a male fire finch and a male canary. So in my experience you should not encounter any problems keeping them with any of these species.

I have a friend that breeds her in a small avairy with owls, orange cheeks, blue capped waxbills, gold breast waxbills, gouldians, parrot finches, twinspots, and i think 2 other species...

They have raised a clutch or two that way... i have 1 pair that i havent really tries to breed yet. But am about to set them up along with 3 pairs of orange cheeks, 2 pairs of owls, and cordon bleus, and red cheek cordons.... we will see....

I don't have any Black Crowned Waxbill so can't say much about them. I do have an outdoor aviary that houses a variety of finches along with 3 canaries. In my aviary, the most gentle finches are orange cheeked waxbills, bronze winged mannikins, cordon bleus, societies, and lady gouldians. Any of those would do well in your aviary.

Good luck :D
