I traded my spice finch for a society. Hoping it would be a female to go with my male. At first I thought I had the right sex because my male was all excited and started singing and tried to jump her right away. Then after awhile... nothing.
The new bird sings too but it does a trilling sound, like a cricket. Do societies make that sound? It looks like a society to me. I'd try to find a sound clip for it but my pc doesn't have sound

My female society chirps. She dosen't puff up and sing like a male does. She just hops around and chirps. A male would puff up and make a song.

I just got another society to go with my female today. I'm hoping it's a male.

This new one doesn't do the dance..just trills. They seem to get along ok but I was hoping to hear more singing from my male. He sounds so nice and is so cute when he hops around puffed up. lol

I have a few societies an they all have different songs and i have one that almost sounds like a cricket sometimes and its a male.

Haha. I've never heard my society do that. But I played some sounds, trying to see if my new society wuold sing and it makes the cricket noise!
I don't know, Let me know if you get an answer to that noise!

So which one did the noise. The Female?

The one that made the cricket noise is the one I got yesterday so I'm still trying to figure that out.

Oh, I gotcha. We both got new finches yesterday. lol

Last one to sex their new bird is a rotten egg!

I was told when I bought mine that if you look carefully that the males have a very slightly pointier beak. I don't know if this is cobblers or not but looking at my societies,(when they sit still long enough) one does have a slightly different shaped sharper looking beak. I think they both make the cricket noise though so going by that theory they are both the same sex and it is cobblers!

One sings...One lays eggs...everything else is hearsay.

I think people just tell you what you want to hear to get you to buy the birds.I was told that my canaries were very definately a pair when they both turned out to be female and me, being a gullible plum takes it all in and buys them.

Well I got four more Societies. I was really pleased because they aren't very easy to get hold of here. I rang a garden centre that I have rung numerous times on the off chance that they would have some and they actually did.

I think I definately have a male this time, as soon as I put him in with the others he started singing and dancing and bopping about and being rude! Its definately a very different noise to the sounds that the others make and Ive never had one do that before so I think he now has five females to choose from!

Could have given you 12 for free last year Ruth...loads around here in the Midlands.

Me talk posh? Ha! Your having a larf, I'm as common as muck.

It honestly is hard to get them round here, I've been to breeders who advertise having them and when you get there they say sorry, they havn't actually got any. That's how I got my black cheeks, they were supposed to be societies!

I shall ignore the nagging remark.
