Hello Everyone

I thought I would introduce myself. My real name is Rebecca. Acky is a nick name that my dearest friend hung on my. So I use it on line a lot. Over 25 years ago I had an aviary. But children came along and I didn’t have time for it. Sold the birds and it came down. Now my kids are grown and gone. I missed my aviary so much I asked hubby to build me a new one. It goes all the way down one wall that is 23 feet long. It is 4 feet wide and from floor to ceiling a little over 7 feet. There is two small south facing windows in it. So the birds can if they want sunbathe. It is a mix community aviary. These are the birds I have in 3 pairs.

Black Crowned Waxbills
Bronze Wing Manikin
Gold Breasted Waxbills
Green Singers
Lavender Waxbills
Orange Cheek Waxbills
Red Cheek Cordon Blue
Red Ear Waxbills
Indian Silverbill
Societies Finch
Owl Finch
Red Face Parrot Finch
Shaft Tails
Red Face Star Finch
Zebras – All kinds even black cheek.
Greenback Gouldian
European Gold Finch
Black & White Manikins

I am waiting on Strawberry finches.

Every morning before the aviary lights go on I fix them what I call a birdy salad. It has carrots, spinach, sprouts, hard boiled eggs with shells, apple, oranges, peas & corn, topped with freeze dried meal worms.

I also raise canaries…just for the fun of it.

One of the funny things that sometimes happens is a bird can't fly the aviary. It take about for days for their wings to get strong enough. When that happens you just know they spent a lot of their life in a cage. You can see in one of the picture a little ladder. That is for the birds that can't fly yet to hop up and get water. Being birds enough seeds are spilt for the ones on the ground to get food. BUT I am happy to sat right now I have no birds that can't fly the aviary.

Hi Acky, and welcome to the Forum

What a lovely set up, I love the little nests on the wall, really cute. What sort of paint do you use to colour them with?

Sounds like you are already a Birdaholic, so you should feel right at home with all of us bird nuts :-D..

Looks like you have quite a collection, for a moment I thought you were listing my bird family, as we appear to have quite a few of the same species, lol.

I share my home, with several birds as well...

Red billed Fires
Red cheeked Cordon bleu
Orange cheek Wax bills
Green back Gouldians
Yellow head Stars
Red headed Parrot Finches
Shaft tails
Cut throat Finch
Strawberries
Gold breast Wax bills
Red Ears
Societies
Zebras
Budgies

Used to have Green Singers
And I also raise Canaries, because those babies are just so gosh darn cute :-D

We would love to see some pictures of your birds. Oh and if you'd like to rent your hubby out, I am thinking that there are quite a few Forum members, who would take you up on it, if he'd build us Aviaries like the one he built for you... =)) =)) =))

Best wishes.

Elana I don't think you would want him to make an aviary for you. He is not an animal person and was not to happy about building the aviary. lol He only did it for, because he loves me and knows I would be on him the rest of his life until he made it!! :D

Okay...made the birds unhappy for a few but I chased them to one end of the aviary and took a picture. This is not all of them. Some stayed in nest boxes and other flew pass me. So enjoy what I did get. :D

Thank you all for making feel very welcome. I'm glad I have a place to talk about my birds. I think the family is getting a little sick of it. hehe :D

Hi Acky.

Thanks for sharing your birds with all of us.

So keep hubby at home then :-D. Although most of the women on this Forum, could probably nag him half to death, but he doesn't 'love' us, so he wouldn't cooperate, sigh ~~~ Another good idea shot down, ah....

I really do love your set up though, and your birdies, look fabulous. Just wondering, is your aviary in the upper part of the house, or in the basement? Is there an outdoor section added to one of the windows???? Don't tell hubby I suggested that, or he might come here and shoot me :-). Just a thought...

It is in the basement. It is best for the birds and for people. Very few people go to our basement and noisy birds drive my hubby crazy. No part of it is outside, nor do I have an outdoor one. The weather here would just wipe out the birds. It is also safer inside.

I don't know?? Hubby is pretty good at doing things for others that need his help. He is very caring in that way. He just not an animal person. But I still love him...I better we are coming up on our 33 wedding annv!
