Indigo Finch

Post by LD » Wed Jul 16, 2008 1:36 pm

I bought a pair of "indigo" finches this weekend, and cant seem to find them online. The male is a very shiny solid dark blue (looks black in some light) and has a light colored waxbill type beak. The female is brown with some stripes on her face. The breeder had another name written down that started with a C I thought, but failed to write it down. What else could these be called?

Thanks

Where are you located? Do you have pics? Size? It is hard to ID a bird without more information, but could it be a Combassou (an African species)? Google that and see if you can ID your bird. I suppose if you are outside North America it could be an Indigo Bunting--they are illegal to be kept in the U.S.

I believe they're relatively hard to find. Aren't they the host bird for one of the whydahs?

From what little information I have found, it said they were in the whydah family and they were parasitic as well. Guess I can forget any babies, since the only other finches I have are Lavender waxbills, I dont have a clue what gender they are. I dont think my toucan would be interested in that either

I'm going to join in with the "oooh"ing over your toucan! I've considered them for several years, but know it would be many more before I figured out if I really wanted to live with one.

This petshop owner I know has a pet Toucan in the store....They need LOTS of room to hop around and to make sure they don't slam their beak against anything. Beautiful birds though.
I don't have any finches right now but I used to, I'll try to provide my knowledge around the forum
