Two things I have noticed.

Post by Acky » Mon Apr 13, 2015 1:43 pm

I noticed two kinds of behavior that goes on in my aviary. One you could call mob mentality. If one takes a bath many will join in. It’s like they think “OH! That a good idea!”

Second I noticed a lot of times when I bring in a new bird they don’t know what to make of the greens and eggs I give them. Now in the aviary new one will take to it much faster seeing everyone else eating. But some of my canaries will just look it over for a while before trying it. Slowly they start seeing this stuff is good. =D>

Acky

This is very common behavior among birds, and teenagers :-D. Not so much a mob mentality, as a group mentality. If everyone is doing it, then it should be ok.

It's the best way to get these guys to try something new, put them in with a bunch of others who're doing it.

It's funny you say this, because I'm happy to have my Weanies away from the parents cuz not only do they DO the things other birds do, but they also DON'T do things the other birds don't do. For instance, my Weanies won't eat something if they parents don't eat it, they wont' even try it!! So now they are alone (not with the parents anymore) and i'm giving them foods to try that my parent birds WILL NOT eat, hoping to get the Weanies to have a more extensive "pallet" if you will... so far, no go, but I'm still working on it, my own fault, i Need to learn to do ONE thing at a time, or they get overwhelmed, and won't try anything!!! But you are right, my female wouldn't try anything new, but as soon as my male was down there eating it, she came down like "oh, all right I'll try it now..."

My birds do the bath thing, I only have 2 finches though. They do like to follow each other sometimes.

I have experienced the first subj. I had 4 pairs of pigeon, I put a baby in bath basin, then its mother came in and started to bathe, suddenly all of the others wanted to do it!! that's right:)
