Runny poop red cheek cordon bleu what can it be?

Post by metinemre » Mon Apr 13, 2015 3:31 pm

We recently got a pair of red cheek cordon bleu.
Both male and female are very active, however female shows signs of sickness?
Female is puffing up and taking naps on perch during the day. (Head is not under wing but eyes closed)
I don`t think she is egg bound.
We checked the vent and there wasn`t anything dirty etc.
But she does have runny poop almost like diarrhea
She eats drinks with no problems.
They perch side by side and preen each other.

Started using the 4 in 1 powder just in case, tomorrow i will provide a heat lamp to one of the perches aswell.

What shall i use? Is 4in 1 powder good enough? I also have ronex 6%

I don`t think she is doing well. I just added a heat lamp but she isn`t sitting under it, she started sitting alone on the lower perch and bottom of the cage. So sad :(

Ronex 12% is better for diarrhea...14 days. What meds did you treat your newbies with during quarantine? She should be isolated in a hospital cage, and her cage mates will have to undergo treatment as well. Stay away from greens while treating her. Put white printer paper in the hospital cage bottom and post pics of her poop. Diarrhea can be trichonomas, parasites, etc. You might consider joining Finchaholics on FB. There are lots of people with experience in diagnosis/medications that can help you. Of coarse, your avian vet can run lab work on poop as well...which will get you the correct diagnosis quickly.

I only used probiotics since i got them. Sick female is in same cage with the male i don`t have another cage right now. I thought i`d treat them both at the same time since they were together all the time.
Today is the 2nd day i started using 4in1 powder. Shall i continue using it or switch to something else? I don`t know how quickly i can take the poop and get the results. I am scared to lose her. She has been with us 6 days now and showing symptoms for 3 days(sleeping during the day, puffed up, watery poop) But probably she was sick when we got her because they are indoors and we don`t treat them with anything that we don`t give / do to others.

Joining fb page now and will do the white paper tomorrow.
My wife told me she was eating and drinking medicated water all day, sleeping under the heat lamp a little than eating drinking again.

Eating and drinking is a good sign right?

What i have at home is
4 in 1 powder
ronex 6%
coccicare
liquid calcium
liquid iodine
probiotics
feather fest
miracle meal
vitamins for bird

I can go get anything that is needed or if it will be the best i can take the bird to avian vet last time we took the bird to the vet he was put to death so i am really debating now.

With a hen, I would always also give a drop or two of liquid calcium to the beak, along with the heat lamp. It doesn't hurt, and just in case it might be egg binding, better to be safe than sorry.

sally ginene lovezebs

Ladies here is the picture of their poop on white paper. Found and started using ronex 12% yesterday.
She is still eating and drinking and using heat lamp from time to time. Still puffed up still inactive, runny poop and sleepy on the perch most of the time. Last night i left an led nightlight on top of their cage to direct her to food and water aswell.
Also gave her 2 drops of liquid calcium from the beak today.

off topic: decided to do worm away treatment for the other cages since everyone is under quarantine. I added it to water as directed. Is one day treatment enough for precaution quarantine treatment on that?

If I were you, and you have access to an Avian Vet (and can afford it) I would take her in.

I don't like the sound of her behavior. They can go downhill so quickly, and if by chance, it's something contagious, all of your kids might come down with it, seeing as they have been in close proximity to one another.

metinemre...I am FAR from qualified to help you with this...but I have wonderful friends who can help you. The group is called Finchaholics. Terri (owner of glamgouldians.com), Cindy (owner of Finchaholics FB Page) and others have extensive experience with avian illness, avian meds and avian vets. What is your name on FB??? I will message Cindy and ask her to approve your membership asap. Then you can post symptoms and poop pics for help. Terri and Cindy just helped me with my BB Gould male that was under the weather during his molt. Their experience is priceless...although, I am a true believer in my avian vet!

Thanks for all the help, today we took the sick female to where we got our birds from and Dave was so kind to take her to his sick bird cage and continue treating her himself and gave us a new female.
I also got all the available antibiotic and some other medications on line to be prepared better next time.
