So, all I have been wondering what my baby zebras are. Everyone said fawn and that they had to be girls... I knew they weren't girls cuz they been trying to sing since in the nest!!! And now they are coloring up to be boys but almost like CFW's, except their backs are a little darker. I emailed Roy from efinch.com and he got back to me within 24 hours and said my boys are lightbacks, BUT because their mother is CFW, they are CFW lightbacks (split for CFW) so they are much lighter!!! They are still in thier juvenile molt, however when these beauties color up completely I will have photos! But Sheather, wanted to tell you you were the first to be right, you were the first to tell me that they were lightback!!! and actually MiaCarter said it in the beginning. But, anyway, thanks to everyone for my trying questions of mutation. So my cock (father) must be split fo lightback. And now my boys are split to CFW, which is why I can't find any pictures that look like them, because they are both!! Anyway, molt is coming along nicely so I should have some good pictures soon (they look kind of scraggly right now!! poor things) but they are starting to practice the "birdie dance of love" on each other... I told my mom today to watch them and make sure they don't "practice" on EB (the only girl!!!)

Watch your two little Romeo' carefully, or Ebee, might present you with unexpected surprises. Zebras, can breed at a very young age .

lovezebs I know that Zebras can breed (actually was going to ask how early, cuz I really wasn't sure) But that's why I told my Mom to keep an eye while I'm at work... I don't need any lil bro-sis eggs... Ugh, just the thought of going through breeding again.. :shiver:

I have noticed thought that the 2 Gray Babes, my two NG's stick together, they seem to be "bonding" and the two Lightback (love being able to say that now btw!!! ) seem to stick together, but I noticed my two NG's cozying up... they are cock & hen, so I REALLY need to keep an eye on them, maybe separate them... Not sure what/how to do yet, but the gears are going. I realized, I am surrounded by all MEN!!! Ebee, Charlotte and I are the only girls out of 10 of us!!! (one human, 9 birds!!!) But I noticed the bond between the 2 grays, I don't think that Henry (my NG young cock) would let the LB's near Ebee... not that she needs help, being the oldest, she's a Brute, and can DEFFINITELY take care of herself.
Anyhow, I can not WAIT to show you all photos when all the babies are colored up. So far, they are molting and getting in their adult plumage fairly quickly. So I'm thinking within a month or so I will have photos of my BEAUTIFUL ADULT Zebra Finches!!!

Finches can breed at 3 months, and last autumn I had an accidental litter of four between a 3 month old hen and her 8 month old half-brother. Everyone survived and grew up but one of the babies had pretty significant foot deformities.

I would do more than just keep an eye on them. I would be shopping for another cage, girl, if I were you.

Well I guess I know who to ask for help when my two start to colour up. The father is a visual light back - exactly the same as you would see at efinch but he is supposed to be half black-cheek. I am not sure if the mother is the same or a fawn and if she is also half-black cheek?

I am so happy the mystery is solved and can't wait for pictures!
