owl finches

Post by slwatson » Thu May 07, 2015 12:12 pm

I'm getting a new pair of owl finches this weekend, and wanted to get some info about them from someone who's had personal experience with them. How's their temperament? Do they get along well with gouldians and society finches? Are they similar in size, or larger? I just want to be fully prepared so they'll do well with my other birds :!:

I had owl finches in the past and they were in a mixed aviary with several pair of gouldians and they never had a problem with any of the other finches. They are smaller than gouldians but they will be fine.

They are smaller than the birds you now have, but they are fully capable of coexisting with those species. When you get them, we all love pictures!

You shouldn't have any issues mixing owls with societies and gouldians, the owl finch as has been said are alot smaller, you'll also find them to be more active then the 2 species you have.

we love our owls :D we named them Mr. and Mrs. Bean. they co-exist very nicely with our gouldians and are generally the life of the party.

Owls are super sweet and very active. They fly much more than my gouldian and society finches do. Mine are willing to try new foods and are the first to jump into the bath :)

You got them :)

The're very entertaining birds

My 3 pr are nesting at moment, 1st clutch were due to hatch today, the not knowing if eggs are fertile/hatching is frustrating and everytime i enter birdroom i have to keep telling myself 'NO, leave them alone'.
Hopefully i'll hear begging chicks in a few days followed by little owls emerging a few weeks later :)

Best of luck with your new additions

slwatson I bet they will enjoy being part of your bird family. It is interesting to watch their personalities come out. My Owls try everything I put into their dish & seem to help teach the birds who are less adventurous.

I love my owl finches! They get along with my GS, gouldians, Society's, and PF's. They are cute and active and not a problem with any other finches! Make sure they have room to fly horizontally. Mine love swings and some greenery at the upper portion of the cage/flight. The love to take baths daily and I give mine fresh water twice a day for the baths, which helps keep their feathers in good condition. Enjoy and congrats!

I can't seem to find my pics that show the greenery in the cage, but you can see my Forbes fledge with a Society and the owl fledge. They all still get along famously. =D>

My owl pair were the first ones to try the new soft foods I've started feeding my finches. I was so excited to finally see it! The only bird who seems to be a little irritated with them is my female gouldian, but I've noticed she's like that with everyone. Maybe she's going through her teenage years, because she's just started to color out. I think I'll be adding more owl finches in the future!
