Meet "Green Lantern"....my grandson named him! So far he has not done any singing or much of anything other than keeping his distance. I'm thinking he's wild caught. I'm hoping to find him a pretty "green gal" to take his mind off of things. He's beautiful!!!

Found Green Latern a new "babe"....Sophia! When she calms a little I'll post pictures. Both birds are very "flighty", so hopefully they will calm down sooooonnn.....!!!

Love the name 'Green Lantern.' I have a wild caught one also...at least I am assuming that is why he is so flighty. I have had him a year. He is still very quick to fly, so I moved him up higher and away from any entrances so he can see me coming and not worry about being 'sneaked' up on. I think it only took about a week and he was singing.

Green Lantern and his new gal Sophia seem to be settling down a little more. I agree with you Derk that they are very flighty and FAST! I've noticed a little more singing lately, but nothing to "write home about" yet. Did yours breed? Are they difficult to breed?

I only have the one male - so no breeding.
This spring was the first time I allowed any birds to keep eggs - it was a pair of Zebs. They produced two babies and everything went well. I think I am going to try allowing some Gold-breasted waxbills to breed next. I am thinking of getting a female green singer in the fall. I read four years ago, when I first started, that green singers could be difficult to breed. But I followed a blog my an English gentleman, once he supplied lots of greenery around the nest and gave them space they successfully produced chicks. I am sure there are others of the forum who have successfully bred these guys. Just search green singers in the breeding section.

Derk WHAT? LOL I remeber that fable...but I don't get how it applies here.... am I dumb, or not remembering the story right. Doesn't he walk out into the village with no clothes on, cuz the guy tells him about these "special" outfits...and he ends up going out nekkkid? lol or am I remembering totally wrong!

Jen - before I built my outdoor aviary in 1989 I had a pair of green singers and a pair of European goldfinches in cages in the house. The goldfinches settled down pretty quickly, the singers stayed quite flighty and never seemed to be completely at ease. Eventually I sold them to a friend who had an outdoor aviary and they relaxed immediately. They are very active and fast birds and I think they need a lot more space to actually fly than most finches. I know this is not really helpful to you, but I think the more space and hiding places you can give them (and also put the cage up as high as possible), it will make them more comfortable. Good luck with them, they are beautiful birds.

BTW, putting the cage very high (above eye level)also helped my goldfinches.

Yes, my green singer is housed above eye level to improve his comfort. I forgot to mention that.
