Sexing Zebra Finches

Post by Jessbe18 » Thu Jun 11, 2015 2:24 am

Hello everyone,

I'm very new to this hobby. My folks received a pair of zebra finches as a gift which turned out to be a male and female. Of course having a nest in the cage, the pair reproduced. I have since re-homed three of the young birds (12 weeks old) for them and I took what I believed to be two female birds and left two males with them. Is it possible to keep same sex pairs?

I thought I had sexed the young correctly, but tonight I came home to two eggs in the cage of what I believed to be females and I noticed attempted mating behavior. It would give me some peace of mind if I could have some opinions as to the sex of this particular bird. I'm still learning a lot as I go. I just do not want any fertile eggs...

I'm still learning quite a bit and I look forward to what this forum has to offer!\

Sorry... the pictures of the bird I am questioning are toward the bottom. I posted comparison photos to other birds that I know the sex of (the parents) as well.

the bird in question is a hen... hens can have black smudges in the chest called show faults.
