Hello,
At what age can you tell what gender Gouldian's are? I have two clutches that hatched (yay!!) and one is three weeks-old, the other is one week-old.
I can identify the gender of societies at about 6 weeks old based on their beak shape and position of the eye in relation to the beak line - but I have no idea how to identify Gouldians until they are older.
Thanks everyone!

The only one I know of who can identify sex of babies as young as that is our friend Nixity.
Other than that, sometimes a genetic forecaster will tell you of sex possibilities based on knowledge of color.
Think you have to wait a while

My gouldian babies are 5 weeks old and I don't think they start to color up until a few more weeks and then it takes a couple months to complete their adult molt. (I believe)
I am very new to this, but I think that I have a boy and a girl, just because one's back coloring is MUCH lighter and from my parents the boys would all be dilutes and the girls all green backs. So I am guessing the lighter one is a boy - this is all speculation though - we shall see!
Congratulations on your babies!

First of all, congratulations on new babies.
I find that I can't figure out Gouldian gender, until they start to molt. Usually once they start molting, the boys will have slightly brighter chest feathers coming through than the girls. Then again, once they mature a bit, the boys do start singing.
With babies as young as yours, I wouldn't even attempt a guess.
Enjoy your babies.

My juveniles are comming on the 3 month mark and for the last month three of the five babies have been singing. I think you're babies are a little young yet but should start soon to sing. Much easier to tell the gender that way than waiting for them to colour up.

Thanks everyone!
This is my first time with Gouldians so I didn't know what to expect. The funny thing is that now I found another clutch of four eggs that one of the Gouldians is sitting on. I just candled them and they look really healthy.
It's a good problem to have, but I am going to be over-run with Gouldians!

I've a few juvenile gouldians (3-7months old) and had no idea of the sex until they started moulting/singing, the younger ones started moulting alot quicker/faster than the chicks from december.
Your doing very well to be able to sex the societies at 6 weeks, i always wait until they sing late in moult before being sure of sex and then fit a blue split ring.
