Hand-raised Purple Grenadier chick

One of my youngest Purple Grenadier (Uraeginthus ianthinogaster) pair, hatched their first clutch of 3. Only one was fed and alive the day after hatch. The parents were a little freaked out, at these tiny alien creatures, and not sure what to do. So, I pulled the baby, and hand-fed.
I learned many things from trying to hand-feed these guys last year. It was not an easy task, and there was pretty much no sleep for the first 10 days. ;-)

I can't swear by it, but the chirps and begging sounds seemed to stimulate another young pair, into nesting, and now they have 3 5-day old babies themselves! Chirps from that nest are getting louder, and the parents eat Phoenix worms (black soldier fly larvae), as fast as I can dump them in!

I will detail what I used for rearing and feeding this little one, in a separate post.

Enjoy the photos of growth progress!

Wowee!
I know this is a super tough species to breed and even more challenging to hand raise!

Big congrats to you! So rewarding!

What a dark colored baby! I can't get over the super dark complexion. So cute!!!

Yay for posting Skye! I just love that you're having luck with this species Lauren. Hopefully you and other dedicated breeders will be able to offer parent-raised, captive-bred Purple Grenadiers in the years to come.

I love you were able to close-band the little one. Are you going to try that with the chicks the parents are currently feeding or are you just going to wait until fledge?
