Please Welcome my New Member of the Family (Blue Gouldian)

Post by ohboi_jc » Sun Jul 19, 2015 7:30 pm

Please welcome my two new addition - a BB male and a YB split-to-blue female. I cannot stop looking at these two. They came from the Port Arthur bird mart. Did anyone else go to this mart? They had such beautiful birds! I am so excited to begin this journey with BBs - and had random success getting 2 BB baby from 2 YB parents. So now, I am spreading the joy and luck to other members of the forums wish you guys great success with your birds and future birds! [-o<

Any suggestions on catchy names for these 2? I label all my bird's cages with their names!

You lucked out! Beautiful! A little bit jealous over here lol. I've been looking for a blue hen for a while. A lot of genetics possibilities with those two. I can certainly understand your excitement. Best of luck!

Yes I went to the Port Arthur fair. It turned out to be a really good fair with lots of birds. I also purchased a pair of gouldians, both yellow backs. I also picked up a couple of button quail hens for my quail boys and a canary hen for my guy "Patch". All are doing well tonight. I'll post pictures soon

Compared to last year's fair, this year was a big improvement. There were breeders from Corpus Christi and Lafayette, LA. Also purchased a couple of nest boxes from some nice folks from Kansas. All in all, I had a lot of fun! It was so exciting to see so many new people there.

Joshua, Congrats on your new birds. I'm so envious of your BB. I've been looking without success for a reasonably priced BB male in my area. Good luck getting BB babies :D

On the names, I like Nightshade for the male.

Thanks everyone!

@Jen I was there pretty early on Saturday at 9:30 to noon. I figure my chances would be higher if I was there early. Also, I think there is a possibility our YBs might be related since I got my YBs from the same vendor. How cool is that!

@vienneparis You will find your perfect BB soon. I just got extremely lucky. I passed by this vendor and it was his ONLY BB male. I told myself that he was mine regardless of his price - so I made my sister run to the ATM and grab more cash after spending a pretty dime to get my dad birds for his aviary. I just couldn't leave without him! Nightshade is perfect and the YB can be SunRise. What do you think?

I went early Saturday also! I was hoping to find owl finches and I'm still looking for a male rosey borque .... but I can't go the a bird fair and leave empty handed! I LOVE these fairs! I like meeting the people there and talking birds. I purchased my yellow backs from the older couple from Louisiana. I had spoken to him on the phone a couple of times, but this was the first time I met him and his wife. He has VERY healthy birds and knows so much about breeding gouldians. He has invited me to go by his home and see his "set up" for breeding. I learn something new from him every time we talk.
My pair are unrelated, but you and I probably have cousins!

I was in your shoes a year ago when I first started keeping Gouldians. Keep searching and your dream bird will come!

Thanks Debbie, you have been great help!

So that was you looking for the male rosey borque! The guy at the entranced asked me about this. The older couple was the sweetest and most kind people there. I talked to him for a good while too. He said the prices he charge for his birds are the same prices he charged 10 years ago. I wanted all of his birds LOL. He extended his home to me and said if I need any specific birds to give him a call - so I took his card. Cousin birds! I like that, lol!

Yes, the older couple selling the Goulds were the nicest people there. He said he could get higher prices for his birds,(no doubt about that) but he wasn't in it for money. He wanted people to be able to afford to get them and breed them so Goulds would become more plentiful and available for others. He's a great guy who loves his birds!
