Ringing baby goldfinches

Post by Vcatalosi » Tue Jul 21, 2015 4:27 pm

Can someone give me any tips on ringing baby goldfinches. As they have hatched on consecutive days and I don't want to cause too much stress by ringing them.

hi. i used to put the ring on the babies between day 5 and 6 depending on their growth. you want the ring to go in the leg not very easy, so i doesn't fall of that day.
This is the easy part.
The difficult part is getting the mother not to throw them out with the rings. Usually carduelis family is very picky on cleaning the nest from intense colors or droppings. there is a couple of things you could do to save the babies from this.

first thing is to put a net on the nest loosely of course just like so

the other thing is to camouflage the ring with the same nesting materials, just stick them somehow to the ring but dont glue them
the other thing is camouflage the rings droppings (its nasty but it works)

watever you do, keep a close eye the first 3 days after putting the rings
good luck

Vcatalosi - first of all congratulations on your babies! My goldfinches also didn't like the shiny bands on their babies' legs, so sometimes would pull them off again and one time actually ended up pulling the baby out of the nest in the process. From then on I put a little dirt (from my yard) onto the bands to dull the shine. No more problems after that. Good luck!
