Who Is This Bird?
Hi To All
Found this picture on some site or another, and was intrigued.
Can anyone tell me what this bird is? I am assuming it's some sort of a Parrot Finch, but what mutation ? I have never seen anything like him before.

Thanks Padraic. Definitely a mouth full of a name for such a little bird
. I didn't even know they came in pied. Do you have anything like that among your kids? If he's a red head, how come his head is yellow
?

Re: Who Is This Bird?
lovezebs , Elana i wouldn't have 1 as pied as in your photo, went to take photo of my heaviest sg pied but she wasn't anywhere to be seen, only her mate beside his crazy construction

here's some photo's of her from may

She's 2 years old and showing more pied with every moult so who knows maybe she'll be like 1 in your photo in another few years

RF Pied Parrotfinch. They hatch yellow skinned then darken to green at fledging. This hen had 3 Pied in her first clutch by a normal/SG male. Takes several months to show Piedness.

Yes, he is stunning and just so darling I want him!
And he doesn't look like the everyday pied.. When I hear "pied"
the image that comes to mind is very much like Padriac's PFs.
So interesting how there are various mutations of the pied mutation

Oh my Lord, he does like to build, doesn't he? Are you sure he hasn't buried your girl in there?
Your lady, is very pretty.
How on earth did they come up with those colours in a bird that started out bright red and green???

Very pretty as well.
Still can't figure out where the yellow face comes from? The feathered kid in the picture I found, and also Padriac's hen, have a yellow face, and we're talking feathers, not baby skin.
Beautiful birds.

Yes, Laura, he is an amazing looking specimen , and I have to admit, that I wouldn't say no, if someone offered him to me, lol. Fat chance of that though
. Whoever has this bird, is probably in no hurry to part with it.

Re: Who Is This Bird?
lovezebs , you have to be careful when purchasing pied parrot finches, the bird in your photo could easily be 6-7 years old and well passed breeding, my 2 year old sg pied hen didn't show any more pied than her less than 1 year old mate in 1st photo, they get more pied as they mature in age and normaly good looking pieds like in your photo are useless for breeding.
This is photo of a heavy pied i paid too much for that turned out to be geriatric and couldn't fill eggs

How old is too old in the Parrot Finch world?
I don't really know how old my Red faced boy is , as I got him second hand (actually third hand). I do know, that two of my girls are very young, the third is somewhat older (?) He had a run at all three, and I mean a run (he had all three running for their lives), and yet no eggs, although between the four of them, there was some nest building. When I tried to put him with only one female, he plucked her relentlessly, and practically killed her.
Any thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? And making soup out of him is not an option , although it has crossed my mind on one or two occasions
.
Regarding the pied birds. I have yet to see any around my area, so I won't be buying them anytime soon (young, old, or middle aged
)

Re: Who Is This Bird?
lovezebs , i'm not sure how old is too old but anything i've read says years 1-3 are the most productive for the red faced and fertility drops drastically after that, other parrot finch species are supposed to be productive til much older.
All you can really try is put him with 1 of the hens again, once they have settled into nest the chasing should stop although as in your case some cocks can be quite rough and pull out feathers from back of hens head but she's generally fine after they settle on eggs and will regrow feathers at next moult. Even if he's passed breeding you'll still get eggs but infertile. Also cut down on the amount of protein+vitamins you give them once first egg is laid and then increase again when eggs are due to hatch.
