I have a female Society breeding with a Male Zebra. There are five eggs in te nest. I'm new with finches (but have doves and lovebirds), so any suggestions/help would be nice. Does anyone have information, pictures,etc about the cross of these chicks?? Any ideas on the call?? I've heard they'll learn their fathers call, but the Society sings a lot too. I only have the two in the cage, so the Society has to be the female. Any help out there?!?

I had heard that these two species of birds could hybridize but I have never seen a picture of the offspring. Are they fertile?

These hybrids are always sterile.

Grace...When you find out if the eggs are fertile please post! If you get babies from this I'd love to see you post a picture.

My finches have had 2 clutches and both have been kicked out of the nest. The first few days my finches will never sit in the nest, but by the 3rd day the sit most diligently, but it's too late and the eggs are already infertile. Is their anyway I can get them to stay on the nest for the first few days??? I really want to see some babes!! I haven't been able to find much about these hybrids, so I guess I have to live 'n learn!

i have seen crosses of javas and shaftails with societies but not a zebra finch ..it would be interesting to see the outcome of these 2 birds

I don't understand your desire to crossbreed these two species. It's a practice that should always be discouraged IMO.

Normally they don't begin sitting tight until the third egg is laid. So your birds are not acting unusual in that regard. It's unlikely the eggs are infertile for that reason.

Perhaps Mother Nature is trying to tell you something.

It's not so much I want to encourage them breeding(in fact I don't) as I believe they deserve something. The father is somewhat handicapped and is doing a lot for his hen, so I believe he deserves something in return. Yeah, I'm weird that way. Will they kick the eggs out of the nest on purpose?? Actually, when I bought them I was positive I had two males. Unfortunately, my Society was a female. I don't really want to breed any more birds right now as my doves are getting out of hand, but I don't want to seperate them. If the eggs hatch, so be it. If they don't, oh wells, they tried.

Like humans, you can help control pregancy (fertilization) by removing nests and nesting material from the cage. Encouraging them to breed by providing nests is not the best thing to do. My society and bleu lay eggs, but I remove them from the nest as both birds seem to be female.

They throw the birds from the nest because they know they are not going to survive as cross-breeds. birds seem to have an ability to know when something is wrong.

I guess we're both wrong then...I agree; if they lay eggs and are actually willing to sit on them...one clutch or baby for their efforts would be kind for them. It must be very fustrating for the female (if not BOTH) to laiy, nest and sit on eggs that don't hatch. I would allow one baby too!

Nope! My finches, however, are now sitting on 3 eggs. This will be their 3rd clutch and hopefully they won't push the eggs out like the other 2 clutches.... They've been sitting on them much more this time round though. I wish I had something to candle them with.....

Ive seen zebra and owl hybrids also star and society hybrids zebra society hybrids look like societies with the tail of the zebras and has grayish red beak!
