Help identifying if a goldfinch is yellow or buff colour ??

Post by Charlene » Wed Sep 30, 2015 2:17 pm

Hello all,

I apologise in advance if my question may sound silly , I am new to goldfinches British/European .I was wondering if anyone knows how to tell the difference between buff and yellow colour ? As I only have one at the moment which I have been told is yellow , Also how old they have to be before I can see if they are buff or yellow. Many thanks in advance

There, you can find great info on many finch species. No question is a silly question here! Unfortunately, I do not know the answer to your question, I am knowledgable about society finches. Charlene
hi.
i believe you have a young molting european goldfinch and if you are talking about his face mask, the answer is, depends on what you are feeding him.
if you feed him natural plants that they eat in the wild then you might be able to get the red mask they have in the wild but if you dont then the fellow will get that buff yellow

Its actualy pretty easy, buffs are generally bigger have more white on the chest and around the neck, also the tannings are faint a back.. The blaze is not vibrant red
Yelows are smaller, the blaze is vivid red, the black is like coal, the tannings are rich a come wel across the chest
