Is this a male Gouldian?

Post by Ryno2323 » Fri Mar 11, 2016 11:40 pm

I'm looking for a male Gouldian. The pet store thinks this one is a male, but it looks more like my female. I'd appreciate any help in my search for a male.

Definitely hen, because of the lighter purple breast and the lack of intense blue around the head color and the dead give away is the black beak. Black beak means she is in breeding mode.

Go to the 'Information center" at the top left of this page; click on 'species' and then 'gouldians'. Scroll down to 'Breeding'.

Not sure exactly what your looking for but Red Heads and Black Heads have red tipped beaks. Yellow Heads have yellow tipped beaks. When the hens are in breeding mode their beak turns black unless they are Pastel. The Pastel gene blocks the color black so in that case when the hen is in breeding mode her beak becomes smeared with the tip color, instead of just at the tip.

Hope that answered your question. :)
