Green Singers-best kept alone or in pairs?
I am a relatively new green singer finch owner (one male, a few weeks now), and I`ve read a lot of conflicting info about them. Apparently they can be quite aggressive towards their own kind, but at the same time the general consensus is that finches are gregarious, and should be kept with other finches and not be by themselves. I prefer to keep birds in pairs, and would like to get him a mate, but I am a little concerned about any possible aggression towards her. Also, he sings quite beautifully....would he stop if a female GS is in the picture?
He is also quite skittish and startles easily, would he be calmer with a companion?
What size cage would be best for 2 GS's? If I decide to obtain a second one, I may have to upgrade.

Re: Green Singers-best kept alone or in pairs?
I have Gray Singers, which are closely related. I have one pair in a cage that is 38x19x19 (in inches). I have no problem with aggression in a male/female pair, but you cannot keep two males together. When they had babies, I had to remove the babies as soon as they were weaned, because the male parent wanted to go after the male babies. I think all finches do better with companions, preferably of their own species. They do not like to be alone. Green Singers usually cannot be kept with any other yellow-colored birds.

I would definitely get a mate for your Green Singer . They do very well as a couple together.
Males should not be kept together, and as Sally already mentioned, male offspring need to be removed as soon as they are weaned.
Your male will definitely continue to sing with a girlfriend.

Such beautiful birds!!! I have a pair in my outdoor aviary so they have a lot of room to fly. They are in a mixed aviary with Gouldians, Cordon Blues, Gold Breast, Senegal Fires, Societies, Button Quail, Diamond Doves, Rosey Burkes and one lone male Timbrado Canary....and no problems with any of them. My Green Singer pair have not bred so I have not had to deal with aggression issues.
My issue....they have not bred YET! What is the "trick" to get these to breed??? Do I want to deal with their aggression? NO... But I got a pair for a reason...guess we are not on the same page about "pair duties"!

Jenny, my guys when I had them wouldn't breed in a mixed flight. They did however breed in a breeding cage, where they had privacy, and a breeding box. Maybe that's what your guys are wanting.

Thanks Elana. I will have to give that some thought. Now that I have my outdoor aviary, setting up cages is not what I want to do. I have only one cage with Sammy, my cockatiel, set up in it in my home. Other than the occasional hospital cage, it's a big relief to not have to clean cages every week!
On the other hand I'm considering adding on to my outdoor aviary to separate my Gouldians. I had about 20 babies this season so my "rainbow" is really growing and I need to do something pretty quickly. That along with several GB waxbills and RCCB, it's getting to be a "big party house" and I need to breakup the party!

Don't worry, there will be lots of pictures. But first I have to have a plan....then I have to "dive in" and do the work....that is the hard part. I have to be mentally ready....as the years fly by I just can't seem to do what I used to!
I am definitely not a carpenter so all of the obstacles I run in to (problems I create because I don't know what I'm doing) makes it so much harder
.....but then did I ever tell you my middle name is "adversity"? ;)
