The Kakapo, hailes from New Zealand.
It is also called Owl Parrot.
It is a flightless, ground dwelling Parrot, who is nocturnal. It lives up to 95 years, and at 23-25 inches and 2-9 pounds, is apparently considered the heaviest parrot.
Because it is ground dwelling and flightless, it's been hunted by people and an assortment of animals (cats, dogs, etc. that arrived to the islands with people ).
Apparently by 1995, there were only 51 Kakapo alive.
A major conservation effort was put into place, which involved capturing all the Kakapo, and transporting them to several uninhabited islands. Once there, they have been offered the best of the best, to try and reastasblish this fascinating species.
By 2002, there were 86 Kakapo, but in 2004, 3 young females died from some sort of an infection. The remaining population, we're immediately treated with antibiotics, and the conservation effort continued.
As of 2012, there were 127 Kakapo. Not sure where we are at as of this year.
A fascinating creature.
