I thought my society babies were small they look like giants next to these little guys, they had just taken there bath, they are the last ones to go to bed lights out at 6:00PM ,society perches at 5:30.there chirping away and flying around till close to 7:30 -8:00.They were my second choice I would like orange cheeked too but they had these, owls, and some that they said were orange cheeked but they weren't the male and females looked totally different .male was real colorful and female was just mostly brown ????

Congrats, they are beautiful!! =D>

You will find most waxbills much more active than society's or gouldian finches. My waxbills are always the last to go to bed and the first to rise in the morning :D

Re orange-cheeks, the males and females are basically identical. You need to know what to look for when sexing them. Sounds like the pet shop was trying to sell you some type of mixed species pair or hybrids.

I was thinking that also,I do not want to breed that is why I decided to get waxbills they seem harder to breed and I have no nest in cage.I have a pair of society and there 4 babies and they are quite active all day ,full of all kinds of mischief. The bleu male is much more active and vocal then the female .I think they are so sweet

I love Cordon blues and you have a red cheeked and a hen but that doesn't automatically mean you have babies. These are hard to breed I have heard. They are adorable pets. You will love them. If they do raise babies your really in luck!
They are lovely.

I just love the pair of red cheeked ,I think they were trying to tell me they had orange cheeked but I think they were orange breasted they Olso had lavenders, I think not really sure would have to take pictures of them and look it up or post on here but I knew the blue cheeked were easy to tell male and female wanted a pair but ok not to breed (no nest)

Same thing happened to us yesterday, 4/30, at NH Bird Supply. Went in to get our two Twinspot's nails clipped and pick up a few small items. Came home with a pair of the Lavender Waxbills. They were on our list of birds we wanted and were surprised to see them there (along with the Orange Breasted Waxbills). Andy

a_gouldian ohhh that's just too funny.Heyyy I'm getting a little better at this that is what I thought they were the girl that was there last sat told me they were orange cheeks and I told her not the ones I want, and thought the others were lavenders they were beautiful.what is the temperament of the lavenders when you were there did they still have owls? I was very surprised what they had ,but not sure the girls in there know much about the finches or canaries they seem to never be able to answer questions.but it sure is nice to get to see something besides society and zebras did you post picturns yet Yet ?

Barbara
The finch information site has species specific information. I believe I read that Lavender waxbills are more aggressive. Your birds look like Cordon Blues to me. Check out the pictures of Orange cheeks and a red cheeked cordon bleu and see what you think.

Barbara, They did have about 10 - 14 Owls on Saturday. The Lavenders are the liveliest birds in the cage. We have them in a large double flight cage with BC Cordon Bleus, GB Twinspots, and Red-billed Fire Finches. We may eventually move one of these bird pairs to another large double flight cage that only has a pair Painteds and Owls in it, but the Painteds are sitting on eggs now so we don't want to disturb them. I will post pics of the Lavenders in a separate post under species now.

All the new finches at NH Bird Supply look really nice and healthy. I wish we had the space for a pair of the Orange-breasted Waxbills but we don't at the moment.
