New pair of Lavender Waxbills

Post by a_gouldian » Mon May 02, 2016 8:31 pm

Our new pair of Lavender Waxbills that we picked up on Saturday. We brought in our new GB Twinspots to get their nails and one beak trimmed to NH Bird Supply and they had Lavender Waxbills and we couldn't resist bringing home a pair. Andy

Beautiful photos! I recently purchased a "pair"....just hoping that they are male/female. Does anyone breed these? How do you tell male from female? You made a great choice. I have always thought these guys had such beautiful colors. Enjoy them!!!

This web site has some recordings of the male and female calls and claims this is the best way to identify sex besides DNA testing.

We definitely have one male because he does do the male one and two note call, but mainly the first note of the call.

The store that had them were sold about 6 pairs and said you can tell by holding 2 birds side by side and looking at the black underneath their tails. The male will have more extensive black that will extend further upward towards the chest. I am not so sure about this method, to be honest, so I hope we have a male and female, and not two males. But in the store she caught about four birds and we did this visual examination as part of the selection process.

They are absolutely gorgeous, and the photos are excellent.
I have been tempted often, but for some reason just never got any.
Please let us know your experiences with them.

They are active, curious birds but are pretty quiet. They have a distinct whistle type of call. Hard to describe but I find it pleasant to hear. They were going into the Cordon Bleus nest so we moved them to another large flight cage. They get along well with a pair of Owls, Painteds, and Gouldians, but the male Gouldian does not like them coming to near the Gouldians nesting box and chases them off.
