Siskin???

Post by Razasings » Mon Aug 08, 2016 10:04 pm

I was given this Siskin as a gift from my grandfather who purchased him from a yard sale. Have no idea what kinda Siskin it is or if it is a Siskin to begin with it?

Reminds me of European siskins but can't tell much from the backside. Could possibly even be a canary... Can you take some more pictures? Where are you located?

I don't know anything about Siskins, but I did want to welcome you to the forum! There's lots of good reading at www.finchinfo.com, where you will find many articles on finch care. If you put your general location in your profile, it will make it easier for members later on.

Razasings - thanks for adding more pictures. The yellow wing bar is certainly typical for several kinds of siskins. Still not sure what to think, though. Will have to check some of my books to see if I can find an approximate match. Is it supposed to be a male? If so has he started singing yet? Any chirps or calls that you could compare to some siskin videos on youtube?

IME that is a european siskin (Carduelis spinus) mule, most likely with a green canary variation.
misses very little patterns from the spinus, especially their black mask and some yellow feathers on their chest, back and on the wings.
is a nice looking mule and if it got some singing sounds from the siskin would have a nice song too, of course if it's a male.

here is an european siskin just to compare it

Hi there,

Initially I thought it was a European Siskin until I enlarged yer picture,

After closer inspection experience tells me that the bird is definitely not a European Siskin or a Siskin mule eaither having bred many quality European siskin mules for exhibition for a number of years

My onest opinion on this is that it looks to perhaps be another sub species of Siskin
Or a foreign Siskin hybrid.

Just a thought

I researched a bit and what gets me confused is the fact it has light feet coloring not dark feet as the European Siskin or female hooded Siskin? The beak as well is dark, some what reasonable close looking to a black chinned Siskin female as well. It has green band on its foot so I don't believe it's wild caught.

It's not a Siskin. It looks like a European Greenfinch male or a cross with a canary.
In Europe they cross easily with canaries and make beautiful mules.

No sorry mate, it's definitely not a greenfinch or greenie mule,

I've currently got 12 exhibition greenie mules in me shed now and have exhibited these for many years, me freind looked after them for me whilst I move house and got me birdroom soughted,

These birds are all bred from big Norwich canaries,

As mentioned earlier I seriously think that this bird is a foreign Siskin hybrid

I think I've worked out what yer bird is,

I've seen these birds many years ago,

I'm quite sure that now you've provided a better pic of the bird in yer hand I'm confident enough to say that this bird is a Hen black headed Siskin which is normally found around the surrounding areas of Mexico etc :-BD

Thank you Stuart whiting and everyone else who tired to help figure out what type of Siskin this beautiful bird. She feels little on the light side I can feel her chest bone, not sure if that's normal?
Have her quarantined with my other little feather friend, on my other post that I believe is female as well. White bellied Canary

She looks ok and is bright eyed and with pretty good feather condition,

I'd keep her on a quality seed diet, perhaps some egg food couple of times a week is sufficient but when she goes into a moult I'd increase the egg food to every day as the protein will help with new feather growth etc, a little bit of green food can also be supplied couple of times a week but don't feed to much as the birds feacies could eventually become a little watery,

Along with some dried egg shell and fine oyster shell to aid some calcium and daily fresh water should see yer bird ok :-BD
