The resilience of Parrotfinches.

Post by 608duj » Fri Sep 16, 2016 8:35 pm

A RF male in the process of attending to fledglings, tangled a leg in the extravagant tunnel nest he had constructed. I noticed quite by accident, by sound really, something sounded off in the room, it was him flapping to free himself. I was able to free him from the tangle but the leg did not look good. It was drooping from the hip and the knee was cockeyed and the foot looked bad. My instinct ( as a vet tech ) was to FIX IT !
So I contemplated splinting the joints as best I could. But it was close to lights out in the room, and even though his leg was dangling in an alarming way he was perky and interacted with the hen and the fledglings as if he felt nothing. I opted for let Nature decide. Lights out. The next day the leg still looked awful but he did not appear to feel it. Over time it got better and better and better with no interference from me.
Now, a month later you would never know he was injured at all. Leg works as it should.

A Parrrotfinch baby that was always small and runty looking surprisingly weaned successfully. Moved to a larger flight I assumed it would weaken and die. He/she hung in there until it got its tiny head through the cage bars and I found it pinned there. So I freed it, and it sat in a crouch for a day like its neck had been damaged. Once again, I opted for let Nature decide. For 5 days it hopped around the bottom of the flight. Then it started to get better and better and better. Today you cannot tell him/her from the siblings.
