I have four societies in one cage and two gouldians and a canary in a second cage. They have been kept in our family room where we have laminate on the floor. Recently we had a cat staying with us for a couple of months, so we moved the cages into the spare room where there is carpet on the floor. Once they were in there both my husband and I seemed to have major allergies whenever we went into that room. The cat is now gone, the societies are back in the family room but we left the canary and gouldians in the spare room since the canary likes to sing so loud. Every time we go in that room it is like a major allergy attack.
My question is which birds are more prone to cause allergies - the gouldians or the canary or are they equally the same. Is there a spray or anything available to reduce the allergens? Is the carpet the culprit?

I dont think its cat dander because the cat never went in that room but I suppose its a possibility. It just really hits when you go in that particular room. We have an air cleaner in there now to see if that helps.

It may not be the birds, but the carpet itself....is removing it an option?

My guess is that it is probably the carpet or the padding under it. The glues that are used contain chemicals that are irritating to the respiratory system.

I did a treatment for an illness that left me with allergies to birds that I never had before. I got rid of a budgie and got two finches but was so sick. We were going to get rid of our finches but my husband decided to try me on a Heppa Air Purifier filter. My Asthma and hives went away!!! I now look forward to getting one to 3 more birds. Maybe a budgie and even maybe a teacup poodle. I plan to see how far I can push it. These air purifiers are a miracle! The purifier we got is called a Germgaurdian hepa UV air purifier.
