Male Firefinches Together?

Post by Hilary » Tue Nov 29, 2016 2:54 pm

Has anybody kept males together in smaller cages? I have two lonely males right now, and each has his own 30x18x36 cage now that their mates have passed on. I've always kept the males separate, but wonder if anybody has had luck putting them together when there aren't females around? Their cages are next to each other so they do have company, and there is a mated pair nearby, but if I can consolidate and give them a chance to be buddies that would be great.

Hi Hilary,

Funny you mentioned that.
I have just recently brought home a single male, because he was being bullied by another male at the Pet Shop, and I felt sorry for him.

The other male kept chasing him, pecking at him, and yanking out his spotty feathers.

So my thougts on that, would be that these males probably don't get along well together.
Maybe in a larger mixed group it might be different, but with only the two together.... it may cause problems (Just like my two Shaft tailed boys, that have to be housed seperatey, because they try to kill each other  ).

lovezebs, that's great news - thanks! I've always kept mine separate - I'm sure I read somewhere that males would fight, but maybe that's only if a female is available? I'll try them together when I'm around to supervise, then. I tried moving one to my community cage upstairs but he kept calling so plaintively that I finally moved him back so he could see the other FFs (and he did quiet right down). Or hmmm, maybe I can move them both upstairs to the community cage and I'll have two larger cages freed up in the basement.........

I don't see why not.
My guys are in a community flight, with Codons, Orange breasts, Redbrows, Strawberries, Orange Cheeks, one lone Star male, and one lone Shaftail male. Everyone gets along amazingly well.
