Male cordon bleu question/mixed community

Post by Nicole R. » Mon Jan 02, 2017 10:59 pm

Will two male cordon bleus fight each other if there are no hens of any kind present in my flight? I do not want any babies, so I am getting all males. I have already ordered:
2 red billed firefinches
2 owl finches (DNA test to ensure males due to monomorphism)
2 red cheeked cordon bleus
2 seagreen parrot finches (DNA test as above)

I am really worried now, but the order is already placed and not refundable or cancellable. These birds are going into a Prevue F030 flight (37×26x48). I know that 8 birds is pushing it for the dimensions of this cage, but I was hoping since there will be no breeding, no nests to defend, and no ladies to bicker over that it might be okay. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Nicole

Too late to ask but why get two males of each species to start with?
You could have had a more diverse flock with only one male of each species.
And with no two males of the same secies, quarrels would be less likely.

If the order is not yet shipped, I'd suggest asking if the 4 2nd males are possible to change for 2 of different species at the same value as those 4 - that way you'd have a less crowded and quite possibly more peceful flight.

Sally has had male pairs of cordons OK I believe, so far as I know they don't get nasty unless there are females about to argue over. They do flock in large groups in the wild when not breeding.

Those birds should be OK, though be aware that there always can be that one bird that didn't read the rule book! Yes, I have had male Cordon Bleus get along as long as there were no hens present to get the hormones raging.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I really wish I had thought of only getting one male of the cordon bleus - a simple and brilliant solution. Newbie mistake. :| And we did so much research! I will keep my fingers crossed that my baby beeps will play nicely together and get along. Will update once they arrive. . .

With the species you are getting, you should be OK, and one thing about having two of each species, it gives them cuddle buddies! Single finches will often have a cuddle buddy of a different species, but I think they would always prefer a buddy of their same species.
