Gouldian finches - how long can they molt?

I got my male LG in summer 2016. He was 6-8 months old. He is yellow back and I was told he'd have a black face after the molt.
He has been molting for over 2 months, his head has been covered with a ton of pin feathers but I don't see any black. It remains very light grey (which I adore BTW).
Does it take that long for the face color to develop or is he stuck in molt?
Thanks

Off note, I don't see any health problems and he has been singing a lot since I brought him home.

Pastel (yellow) gouldians can not produce black color so their head will be white. Your male is a Single Factor Pastel if he has a grey head. Meaning he only has one Pastel gene.

That is a great news that his head will stay light. Thanks you very much for this info.

Now that I read a little about the SF yellow, it explains why his yellow back is not purely yellow but has a few streaks of green-like color.
I learned something :)
Thanks again for your help, Debbie.
