lovezebs I agree. Some species can be massive, and you would not believe how fast they need new toys, and how demanding they are. They get into trouble as well. I've had one turn the stove on while I was away.

Lovezebs, we had a small family farm, and I was living away from home at the time. My sister told me that he was flying close and was very friendly to them, so she caught him, and my mom kept him. When I would come to visit on weekends, I would talk to him and bring pine branches and leaves for him.

wildbird

That's quite amazing.
I wonder if he'd been tamed by someone prior to ending up with your family.

I adore ravens and we have a lot of them around here. When I feed the wild birds every morning I also put food out for them. They have a built-in clock and know when breakfast time is. I also toss peanuts to them when I walk my dog every morning, and so I am followed by a flock of ravens down the street every day. Oddly enough the neighbors have never seemed to notice this, probably a good thing since most people don't seem to like them.

lovezebs wow, how gorgeous. Was this mutation deliberately bred by humans, or spontaneous?

I imagine it was spontaneous; this looks like complete leucism to me, which is one of the most common wild mutations, along with albinism. Leucistic and albino animals often have vision problems due to light eyes (normal or blue with leucism, pink with albinism) and may also have feather or fur problems, as the melanin provides mite resistance, durability, and integrity to the keratin, along with the associated color. This is part of the reason why many birds have a dark boarder along the edge of the flight feathers, which keeps them in good shape despite the rigors of locomotion. Worn/old plumage on many birds, especially shorebirds, appears darker since the light part of the feather is worn away from air, water, and other natural elements more quickly than the darker section.

Uhh, I find those white crows ghastly-ugly.
Black ones might have no novelty value but look so much better.
